I went to the post office and had a long talk (during a time when there was no line!) with the post office clerk and got really into EXACTLY how much I can send, and EXACTLY how fat I can get away with the letter being before they charge me for a package. I went in the week before, when I was first starting to send Love Mail, and I was annoyed to find that they were charging me $5 per regular envelope because they were charging as a package instead of a letter.
I asked why and the kind man behind the counter was very helpful to show me the little slit that they slide your letter through to see if it is too big. It is ¼ of an inch wide. There are other criteria but just for the sake of this post, I have created this list based on what he showed me. I am including flat – REALLY flat things. That means that puffy stickers are not flat enough. Origami is most likely not flat enough. But you can cheat a little by stacking a mountain of books on top of your letters overnight before you send them (a trick I use often). Staying flat is where it’s at, baby!
Did you know that if the number inside the recycle triangle on the bottom or back of a clear plastic container (usually cookies and baked goods) is a # 6, then you can use it to make DIY shrinky dinks? What a fun way to write any personalized message or draw an image that is unique to your stationery! Using permanent markers, draw your image and cut it out. If you want to make it a charm, punch a hole at the top with a hole puncher and it will shrink to a size big enough for a clasp or string. They will need to bake them at 350 degrees for a few minutes (basically until shrunk- depending on size). Be sure to include instructions!
Send small lists of clever / silly things. Let’s face it, everyone has been sending playlists, book lists, and grocery lists (just kidding, I hope) but let’s jump off the deep end and send lists of 5’s. There’s many lists you can come up with! 5 things I found on my bathroom floor, 5 things that I found in my husbands beard, 5 things that I found in my belly button, 5 things that my cat dragged in, 5 things I saw on the way to the store, 5 things that I wish I knew before I … , 5 things I do before I go to bed, 5 things in my purse, 5 things that I found in a thrift store, 5 things I found in the river, 5 scriptures that touch my soul, 5 sayings or quotes that I love, 5 things that I love about you, 5 things that I do when I wake up in the morning, 5 things that I love about my cat, 5 things that I did to my… , I have cooties! Here are 5 ways that I think that I contracted them!

This is a Japanese art form that means “come together”, “gathered threads”, or “braided cord”. The disks can be printed out and used to make bracelets or necklaces. Send one in your Love Mail with instructions or this easy to follow video tutorial on how to use it.
What I like about these is that you can create these by using paper that you are using in your letter to make it match the “set”, or your stationery. I like things to have complimentary colors, although not necessary at all! It’s just personal preference. What I do NOT like about them, is that they are tricky to get really flat. This is where the “mountain-of-books-on-top-overnight-method” works great!
These are easy to find either free or inexpensive that you can print and cut out for before you send. I have seen all kinds of cute trinket or treat boxes that would make a great addition to your Love Mail.
I bought some of these at Dollar Tree that is one large solid piece that you can cut to size for whatever you want. I cut them into large enough pieces to lay flat in the envelope (don’t fold!) and gave each pen pal a couple of large pieces with the instructions to cut them for whatever project they wanted, and I gave some fun ideas on how to use them.
Is your Love Mail recipient crafty? Having a few nice colors that go great together is handy when doing any project. In fact, when I am designing my Love Mail, I use color pallets to help me. You can find many color generators online that you can put in one color, and it will help you to match with hundreds of other colors! Send a few of your favorite color combinations!
I can find old magazines at garage sales and thrift stores that I can use to cut up. In my area, I have classifieds where I can ask for old magazines, and I have had great luck with getting nice stacks of magazines, and even sometimes vintage magazines will make it in there. Vintage magazines are fun because you can send cutouts of people, toys and products from the past, and it is nostalgic to see those fashions and products from the past The other things I like to send are articles, recipes with the beautiful glossy pictures of the finished meal, and if the magazine is vintage, send some outdated advertisements for fun.
I collect children’s storybook art. Not just any art- but wildly interesting, beautiful, colorful art. I buy vintage books at garage sales and thrift stores to cut up. Then I add my favorites to my art journal, where I collect my favorites pieces along with other whimsical things. When I find some that are small enough that I do not have to fold, I will carefully cut it out and send in an envelope to keep it protected. I give the instructions to use for an art journal like me, add to a gift package, laminate and use as a zipper pull, or Mod Podge to something fun like a jewelry box. Right now, I am loving the book art from “Where The Wild Things Are”, because it is a favorite from my childhood, but they are also being banned right now for being “too dark”.
You can find printable vintage-looking stamps, labels, tickets, you name it, you can find it! These are just fun little things that look interesting that can be added to their junk / art journal.
One of my favorite things that I like to do for my Love Mail recipients is to make their name on cardstock about the size of a bookmarker and paint it, and decorate it. Then, look up their name meaning and write it on the back. There is nothing more personal and meaningful than a person’s name!
Do you write poetry? Send one of your best poems, or find one that you can copy. Better yet, print in a beautiful font, and print on decorative paper.
Have you seen these? They are little envelopes with a message on the front that says “Open when you feel sad” or “Open when you need inspiration”, and things like that. Find some examples on the internet and make your own, or purchase from a seller making them. You can send one or a few!
These are super cute and fun to make. Send a precut house and fold it flat for them to color and decorate.
These are pretty easy to find at garage sales and thrift stores with a little digging. You can find magazines that are a decade or older and the people in the fashions of that day, the ads, and products are nostalgic to see today. For fun, throw in a few cutouts and a recipe with a beautiful glossy picture or interesting article!
Seeds of some kinds are flat enough to go through the mail ok. Others, well, you will have to send them as a package due to their bulk. But- for the flat ones, you can send them right in the packet they came in or make a cute envelope with decorative paper with the seed instructions printed or written on it to be extra fancy. You can also print out cute seed packets.
Getting even fancier, turn those seeds into seed paper and cut or mold them into flat shapes. Then they plant the paper. You can also buy seed paper online.
Be sure to cut these out before sending to make this an extra fun surprise. There are so many kinds that you can find these days: Vintage ones, whimsical ones, and traditional ones.

Whenever I visit the oriental grocery store, they frequently wrap my purchases in newspaper adorned with oriental characters. I find it enjoyable to examine and often cut out small sections to include in my Love Mail.
One of my favorite things to include in letters is special paper samples, like scrapbooking or crafting paper, cut to about a quarter page size (imagine a standard printer sheet cut in half lengthwise, then in half again widthwise). I really like to place a beautiful sheet just below the top layer of a bunch of mail. This helps to separate the flat gifts from the top layer of fussy cut or cardstock cutout, making the cardstock cutout more noticeable. To add a touch of class, I wrap everything up with a few strands of golden or silver metallic thread. This small detail makes the whole package of mail look incredibly elegant! The best part is, the person receiving it can use that paper again in their own Love Mail, for a craft, or in a junk journal.
At times, it can be hard to figure out what to pray about. You can either handwrite and embellish some prayer prompts, write them on attractive paper, or print these prompts with lovely graphics on cardstock to make them durable for placing on a nightstand. A rebus is a pictorial puzzle where words or phrases are represented by images, akin to a visual riddle waiting to be solved! They offer an entertaining and engaging challenge. Draw some out with the answer upside down at the bottom or on the back!
Create a list of Logical Fallacies that add an element of intellectual challenge and intrigue to the recipient’s experience, encouraging critical thinking and thoughtful reflection.
Many crafters love to use pretty designs on paper napkins to use to decoupage items with. Add a beautiful precut design to a Happy mail, Love Mail, or penpal letter.
Ensure that these baggies are securely taped shut. If you’re aware that your letter recipient enjoys crafting, they might appreciate a bag of glitter or confetti. Loose glitter is not suitable for inclusion in any letter due to the mess it creates upon opening. I strongly advise against including it in the envelope in that form. However, a very small bag is acceptable, ensuring it’s not filled too full to avoid adding a bump or hump in the envelope, as it could damage the envelope in the sorting machine at the post office. On the other hand, confetti is an acceptable addition to a letter, especially if it consists of larger shapes. Include a few pieces (up to five) of creative and fun shapes, or as a gift, send a small baggie to be used in their junk journal or to share with another mail recipient.
Even though most of us are adults here, there is an element of whimsy to getting fun toys like this in the mail! If you are artistic, you can draw a fun character and then add strips on each side that you cut out and wrap around your finger, with the character in the front.
I play guitar and I can’t tell you how excited I can get over cute guitar picks! They are small, thin, and just a perfect addition to any Love Mail recipient that plays guitar!
Buy scented paper and include a few sheets in the letter. Alternatively, lightly spray decorative paper with perfume or room spray. You can also use a container with a tight-fitting lid, such as a tin can from Christmas cookies or a regular food container. Place a few small pieces of paper inside the container along with a cotton ball infused with essential oils, perfume, or room spray, ensuring it doesn’t directly touch the paper.
Do you possess any beautiful or captivating collectible stamps that you’d like to gift to someone? These would make a delightful addition to a happy mail, Love Mail, or pen pal letter! For an extra special touch, consider placing them inside a tiny decorative envelope. You could even include a small piece of paper within the envelope detailing any stories or historical significance behind each stamp.
These come in many sizes, and you can add a page where there is the entire year at a glance for someone to add to a journal or carry in their purse, or there are tiny pages of a month at a glance, and you can add a few months in a letter.
These are just fun. Make one small enough to fit into the letter and you could even use the snowflake to make a “letter taco” as I call it, which wraps the rest of the contents in the envelope together.

Add the lashes to a small piece of wax paper or parchment paper. Then, put them into atiny envelope or make a small envelope out of parchment paper for a layer of protection when going through the mail.

My friend and I were shopping the other day at a craft store and I saw these super flat Swedish washcloths that had gorgeous prints on them and I thought, if they are small enough for your envelope, they would be perfect to send. These are those reusable washcloths that are made of cellulose and cotton, come flat, and then once you wet them they become these amazing little washcloths. Some people call them reusable paper towels. I just love them! Granted, you would not be able to fit many more flat things in, but it would certainly be the perfect gift for many occasions- and you could probably still squeeze in a few games and a couple of stickers without it being too fat to send with a postage stamp! You might have to modify the size of the washcloth because the biggest size envelope that you can send is no more than 6 1/8 inches tall by 11 1/2 inches long, and the maximum weight (with extra stamps for over 1 oz.) is 3.3 oz. I have not sent one yet, but it is on my list so I will probably write a blog on how it goes in the future and link it here. A hint though, I usually use either my extra large envelopes in my store that I print, or I use invitation envelopes that you would normally send a wedding invitation in, and they are pretty big! You would definitely have to weigh your envelope before you send it… but I am known at my local post office for always trying to…”push the envelope” with what I can mail ha ha ha!
